General of the enterprise, and to him belongs the provision of the positions, and to give them and take them away at his discretion, to assign the pay, to increase it, and to decrease it, according to the merit of each one. The pay, which in all the aforementioned wars the Imperial Majesty gave to the General of the Artillery, was 200 crowns per month of pay. However, the war ceasing, the pay also ceased, and his Majesty confirmed for him another ordinary pay, according to the quality of the person. But now, as there is no war in Lombardy, the Catholic Majesty gives him 100 crowns per month of pay.
The General of the Artillery provides 2 or 3 of his Lieutenants, and more or less according to how large the army will be, and according to the number of pieces of artillery that are conducted in it, which Lieutenants enjoy the same authority that the General has regarding commanding all those who serve in the state of the artillery, and each of them had 25 crowns of pay.
30 Gentlemen of the Artillery are also paid, who are obliged to always accompany it, assigning to each of them 2 pieces in guard, with all the ammunition belonging to them. Of which pieces and ammunition, they must have very particular care, both marching with the artillery, as standing in garrison, and in the field, and especially when the battery is made, of which some of them had 12 and others 15 crowns of pay.
15 or 20 horse-arquebusiers are paid, who serve near the person of the General of the Artillery, for the purpose of sending them out to scout, and to give warnings where it will be necessary for the service of the enterprise, with 8 crowns per month for each one of pay.
For a Chancellor, whom the General appoints, whose office is to take the note of all the money, ammunition, and other things that are dispensed and delivered by the ammunition-keepers to the artillery officials, for the use and service of it, which office is of very great satisfaction to the General, when it will be administered as it should be; because from the lists and receipts of this Chancellor, all the expenses, both of money and of ammunition, made regarding the state of the artillery will be verified, and the occasion is taken away from the ammunition-keepers to be able to defraud any part of the ammunition. Which Chancellor will have 20 crowns of pay per month.
And more, for 8 halberdiers of the General's guard, with 4 crowns per month for each one of pay.
For one or two Interpreters, who are needed when the war is fought with people and remote nations, and in the army there will be some differences of them, 10 crowns for each one per month.
For a Quartermaster-General, whose office is to make the lodging for all those who serve in the state of the artillery, 20 crowns of pay.
For the officials of this Quartermaster, 6 crowns of pay per month for each one.
For another Quartermaster, who serves to distribute the provisions for the whole state of the artillery, 20 crowns of pay.
For a Trumpeter, who serves to publish the decrees and gather the Sappers when needed, 10 crowns of pay.
For a Chaplain, who says Mass to the General of the Artillery, 10 crowns of pay.
For a Commissary, who has the care of making provision of provisions for the people of the state of the artillery, 30 crowns of pay.
For another Commissary, who serves to take the muster of the Horses, Wagons, and Sappers, 20 crowns of pay.
For two Lieutenants of the aforementioned Commissaries, 10 crowns of pay for each one per month.
For one or two Powder Refiners, to refine and arrange some batch of powder that might have been wetted, or spoiled in any other manner, 20 crowns of pay.
For an Artillery Founder, another 20 crowns of pay.
For a Barber, who is a Surgeon to treat the wounded, 10 crowns of pay per month.
For one assistant to this Barber, 5 crowns per month of pay.
The number of Gunners will be 2 or 3 at least per piece of Artillery, that is, Cannon, Culverin, and half-Cannon. The salary of these is 10 crowns ordinary, and more at times according to the sufficiency of each one, and furthermore, they are given a double portion of food, which for a long time now has always been used in war.
