This elaborate copperplate engraving shows a grand 18th century garden and its hydraulic systems. On the left, a stone pavilion with Doric columns houses a large water wheel. This wheel is visible through an archway. Water flows from under the building into a pool where swans swim. To the right, figures in noble dress walk along a terrace with a stone railing. A couple stands in the front, while others sit near statues of sphinxes. A dog runs in the lower right corner. In the middle of the scene, a fountain flows from a structure that looks like a rocky cave. The background shows a large formal garden with patterned flowerbeds leading to a palace under a cloudy sky. The engraving is signed "Rigaud inv Sculp" at the bottom right. This signature indicates that Jacques Rigaud both designed and engraved the image.
original: "inv Sculp" refers to the Latin "invenit et sculpsit," meaning the artist both designed the composition and engraved the copper plate.
