If it should please us to grant him our Letters of Privilege necessary for this: FOR THESE REASONS, wishing to treat the Petitioner favorably, we have permitted and do permit by these Presents, to have the said Works printed and reprinted, as many times as he shall see fit, and to sell them, cause them to be sold and distributed throughout our Kingdom during the span of ten consecutive years, counting from the date of these Presents; we forbid all Printers, Booksellers, and other persons, of whatever quality and condition they may be, from introducing any foreign printing of them into any place under our authority; as well as from printing, or causing to be printed, sold, or distributed, or counterfeited the said Works, or making any extracts from them, under any pretext whatsoever—whether of addition, correction, changes or otherwise—without the express written permission of the said Petitioner, or those who hold his rights; under penalty of confiscation of the counterfeit copies, and a fine of three thousand livres The standard currency of France before the Franc; 3,000 was a substantial sum, equivalent to several years' wages for a skilled laborer. against each offender, one third of which shall go to Us, one third to the Hôtel-Dieu of Paris The city's oldest and most prominent hospital., and the final third to the said Petitioner, or to him who holds his rights, along with all costs, damages, and interests; on the condition that these Presents shall be recorded at full length in the register of the Guild of Printers and Booksellers of Paris, within three months of their date; that the printing and reprinting of the said works shall be done within our kingdom and not elsewhere, on good paper and in beautiful characters, conforming to the printed sheet attached as a sample under the counter-seal of these Presents; that the Recipient shall comply in all things with the Regulations of the Book Trade, and notably that of April 10, 1725; and that before offering them for sale, the manuscripts and printed copies which served as the copy for the printing and reprinting of the said Works shall be returned in the same state in which the approval was given, into the hands of our very dear and faithful Knight, Chancellor of France, the Lord DE LAMOIGNON; that two copies of each shall then be delivered to our Public Library, one to that of our Louvre Palace; one to that of the said Lord DE LAMOIGNON, and one to that of our very dear and faithful Knight Vice-Chancellor and Keeper of the Seals of France, the Lord DE MAUPEOU; all under penalty of the nullity of these Presents; regarding the contents of which we command and enjoin you to allow the said Petitioner or his successors to enjoy, fully and peacefully, without suffering any trouble or hindrance. We will that the copy of these Presents, which shall be printed in full at the beginning or end of the said works, be held as duly notified, and that copies collated by one of our beloved and faithful Counselor-Secretaries be given faith as if they were the original. We command our first Usher or Sergeant required for this, to perform for the execution of these presents all required and necessary acts, without asking further permission, notwithstanding the Clamor of Haro An ancient Norman legal appeal to stop an immediate injustice., Norman Charter, and Letters to the contrary: For such is our pleasure.
