The printer's mark of Henri Estienne (Stephanus): a woodcut depicts a bearded philosopher or scholar standing beneath a large, gnarled olive tree. Several branches have broken off and are falling. This emblem traditionally refers to the biblical motto "Be not high-minded, but fear" original: "Noli altum sapere, sed time"; a warning from Romans 11:20 against intellectual or spiritual pride.
