"The most noble and solitary Rufinus" original Greek: "ὁ εὐγενέστατος καὶ μονότροφος Ῥυφῖνος" ] This is that Rufinus Rufinus of Aquileia (c. 345–411), a monk and translator who became famous for his bitter theological dispute with St. Jerome over the works of Origen. to whom the Blessed Jerome was so hostile. Nicephorus mentions him in book 10, chapter 28, as does Gennadius in his Catalogue of Illustrious Men.
"And they lived in the schism concerning Paulinus" original Greek: "ἐζώωσαν δὲ ἐν τῷ σχίσματι τὸ κατὰ Παυλῖνον" ] Regarding this schism, one should consult Nicephorus, book 12, chapter 3. Cedrenus also mentions it.
"A certain man named Chronius" original Greek: "Χρόνιος δὲ τις ὀνόματι" ] I would write it as "A certain Cronius" original Greek: "Κρόνιος τις". We have spoken of him above, in the chapter Concerning those in Nitria Nitria was one of the earliest Christian monastic centers in Egypt..
"When Paphnutius had come together" original Greek: "συνδραμόντος δὲ Παφνουτίου" ] Regarding him, one should see Cassian in his Conferences, and Rufinus in the Lives of the Fathers, chapters 16 and 25. Sidonius also mentions him in Poem 16, and Nicephorus in book 9, chapter 14.
"And the matters concerning Stephen, who fell away" original Greek: "καὶ τὰ κατὰ Στέφανον τὸν ἐκπεσόντα" ] He means Stephen, the Bishop of Antioch, who was removed from his bishopric on account of a scandalous crime. See Theodoret, Ecclesiastical History, book 2, chapters 9 and 10, and Nicephorus, book 9, chapter 23.
"And Eucarpius" original Greek: "καὶ Εὐκάρπιον" ] Nicephorus mentions him in book 11, chapter 8.
"And the matters concerning Valens the Palestinian" original Greek: "καὶ τὰ κατὰ Οὐάλεντα τὸν Παλαιστῖνον" ] This is that Valens who, along with Ursacius, was removed from his bishopric at the Council of Ariminum The Council of Ariminum (359 AD) was a major church council where the Arian controversy was debated; Valens was a leader of the Arian faction.. See Sozomen, book 4, chapter 16, and Nicephorus, book 9, chapter 11.
"And the matters concerning Ptolemy who was in Scete" original Greek: "καὶ τὰ κατὰ Πτολεμαῖον τὸν ἐν Σκήτῃ" ] Palladius relates more extensively about this man above.
