HENRY VALESIUS original: "Henricus Valesius." This refers to Henri Valois (1603–1676), a renowned French classical scholar who first published this critical edition in the mid-17th century.
Corrected the Greek text from manuscript codices, translated it into Latin,
and illustrated it with annotations.
WILLIAM READING original: "Gulielmus Reading." Reading (1674–1744) was an English clergyman and librarian of Sion College who updated Valesius's work for this 18th-century edition.
Added new explanations, especially regarding chronology, in this edition.
The printer's device for Cambridge University Press, printed in red ink. It depicts the personified "Alma Mater" standing behind a pedestal inscribed with "ALMA MATER CANTA BRIGIA" Nurturing Mother Cambridge. She holds a sun in one hand and a chalice in the other. Two winged figures flank the central scene. The surrounding motto reads "HINC LUCEM ET POCULA SACRA" From here, light and sacred drafts [of knowledge]. To the right of the main seal is a smaller red circular stamp featuring a crown.
