He was also commanded by the Emperor Referring to Justinian I. to write a History of the first Persian war: which was undertaken, or rather renewed, under Justin [I] after the notable defeat of Perozes at the town of Dara (see Procopius’s Persian War, Book I, chapters 13 and following; Royal Paris Edition, 1662, Volume I, pages 35-42). This war was concluded in the year 533 AD by that "Endless" peace original: aperanto. This refers to the Pax Aeterna or "Endless Peace" signed between the Byzantine Empire and the Sassanid Persians, which Justinian hoped would allow him to focus on the West. (for it is called by that Greek name even by Latin authors). However, I have not determined for certain whether he carried out the prince’s original: principis. In this context, it refers to the sovereign or emperor. mandates and actually wrote the history of that war. Nor, although he is quite wordy when recounting his other writings, does he ever mention this one anywhere. Nor, by Hercules, do we long for it so greatly (if indeed any longing for any ancient history can be considered mediocre), because the noble writer Procopius is available to us, who teaches us about that same war at sufficient length in the first book of his Persian Wars. These things Lydus wrote in his early and middle age; but in his advanced and final years, he wrote, or at least completed, the following:
