Theodosian Code, Volume 2

A central rectangular engraving depicts a classical allegorical scene. A seated figure on the left, wearing a helmet and a mail-like bodice, holds a small branch or bouquet. A second figure, draped in robes, kneels at the first's feet and looks upward. To the far left stands a tall, ornate lampstand. Books and scrolls lie on the floor at the figures' feet. The central image is framed by a decorative border of floral and scrollwork patterns on the top and left edges.
