3. "From the blood of those who fell and were mixed with the earth." Query: whether the codices should have "From the blood of him who fell and was mixed," which I think is better. Markland.
4. "Makes men senseless." Clariss. Markland says write "to make," but no change is needed if you add a semicolon after "born." The first Aldine edition clearly shows this punctuation.
5. "Ancestors." Were the Egyptians born from the Giants who once waged war on the gods? If so, this place would prove it! But who else ever said that? No one. Therefore, read "Earth-born" (pēlogonōn); for the giants were called "earth-born" or "born from mud" not only by Callimachus, but by other authors.
6. Eudoxus of Cnidus. He scattered many historical and ritual details in his work On the Circuit of the Earth, which Strabo calls "the history of Eudoxus."
1. "But some avoid certain ones." As Markland acutely saw, "but some people avoid certain ones." The following passage shows this is certain.
2. "The priests abstain from all." Thus Herodotus (book 2, ch. 37): "It is not permitted for them (the priests) to taste fish."
