Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857–1936) was a prominent Dutch Orientalist and a close friend of Goldziher. He is famous for being one of the first Western scholars of Islam to visit Mecca, which he did in 1884–1885 while disguised as a Muslim convert.
