render a great service to researchers of Muhammadan In the 19th century, "Muhammadan" was the standard Western term for Islamic or Muslim culture and history. culture and literary history, if he were to make generally accessible through publication his laborious and conscientious edition of this extremely important Arabic work. This work was plundered quite freely by later authors of Adab Adab: A genre of Arabic literature focused on etiquette, morals, and general education through prose, poetry, and anecdotes., especially by Ibn ‘Abdi Rabbihi and al-Husri—the latter of whom mostly failed to cite his sources.
I hope soon to be able to follow with the second volume of this collection, which is intended primarily to contain a study on Hadith Hadith: The corpus of traditions regarding the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad, which forms a basis for Islamic law and practice. and Hadith literature. I am indebted to my esteemed friend Professor August Müller in Königsberg for his enthusiastic promotion of this undertaking, as well as to my former student, Dr. Martin Schreiner in Csurgó, for his ready preparation of the index for this first part.
