period; besides t (= tus), the fourth and sixth scribes also use t with a hook standing above the line; the latter scribe uses t with an s written above it; besides the usual m-stroke, the sixth scribe uses a double hook that stands on the line. In the reading estis (p. 18, 18) for est Iesus (= IS with a stroke above it), the remains of a very old abbreviation for Iesus are hidden. IS will also have to be assumed in the appendix of M (98, 25)1.
The difference between the two ligatures of ti is carefully observed; if a scribe uses the simple form by mistake, it is always corrected to the epsilon form either by the scribe himself or by the corrector.
The orthography changes with the different scribes. The first distinguishes himself from all others by the following forms: mannes, mannichaeus, moyses, aput (the other scribes always give manes, moses, apud), and in isolated cases from one or the other. The practice of the scribes can perhaps be viewed most conveniently through the following, somewhat arbitrary scheme:
