This image shows the fore-edge (the outer edge of the pages opposite the spine) of a thick book. The edges of the paper leaves appear as many fine vertical lines. These edges show significant darkening and staining caused by age and frequent handling. The volume is bound in a half-binding style. In this style, dark brown leather protects the spine and corners, while the boards are covered in marbled paper. The paper features a mottled pattern of green, brown, and black spots known as a cat's paw design. At the very top of the text block (the gathered pages of the book), a small portion of a red and green woven headband is visible. This decorative thread also helps reinforce the structural integrity of the binding.
