Games of wit are surely in the most inappropriate place in a work whose author declares quite explicitly that he is so far removed from all mockery that he has no other intention than mere instruction and conviction. But just this one thing! How did you like his explanation of the resurrection story of Jesus?
Neophilus. If I remember correctly, he assumes that the crucified Jesus did not actually die, but only fell into a deep faint, from which he reawakened in the grave.
Sophron. Correct! And so as not to offend common sense too much, he assumes that the Jews, at his crucifixion, instead of piercing his feet, were polite enough to merely bind them with ropes and only nail his hands, and that furthermore, the soldier, during the faint, only thrust into his hollow body...
