A heraldic achievement enclosed within a double-lined rectangular border. The crest features a unicorn's head on a wreath. The shield depicts a unicorn rampant. Below the shield, a ribbon scroll bears the motto "SPERO" [I hope]. Decorative flourishes surround the shield. Text is printed around the outer edges of this border.
1. Complete.—It contains all the words—more than any other dictionary; and in the etymological part, it provides unusual and clear explanations where they are wanted.
2. Accuracy.—In this department, the editors were most vigilant. Errors and redundancies, which had been universally adopted, were removed, and the definitions were made methodical. Chauncey A. Goodrich, Esq., the late Professor Lyman, and others, with the assistance and superintendence of Dr. Webster, refined this work.
3. Scientific.—In order to be scientific and accurate, no effort has been spared. Scholars are indebted to Prof. Lyman.
4. Etymology.—The eminent philologist, Dr. C. F. Mahn, has devoted five years to perfecting this department.
This dictionary is the most useful and cheapest ever published, as far as it is known. In all cases, the definitions are given. The remainder of the text is obscured or incomplete.
But it serves to elucidate the meaning of words which cannot be satisfactorily explained without pictorial aid.
The volume contains 1576 pages, more than 3000 illustrations, and is sold for one guinea. It will be found on comparison to be one of the cheapest volumes ever issued. Prices: £1 1s.; calf or half-russia, £1 11s. 6d.; russia, £2.
