The fifty-two volumes that have previously made up the well-known Aldine Series contain the works of nearly all the more popular English poets—whether lyric, epic, or satirical—up to the end of the eighteenth century. However, since that time, the wonderful productivity of English literature has produced many writers equal, and in some cases far superior, to the majority of their predecessors. The significantly expanded list of acknowledged English poets now includes many names not represented in the "Aldine Poets" series.
To address this need and to ensure that a series long held in high public regard becomes a more adequate representation of the entire body of English poetry, the publishers have decided to issue a second series. This will include some of the older poets as well as the works of recent writers, provided that arrangements can be made with the representatives of those poets whose works are still under copyright.
One or more volumes will be released at short intervals. They will be uniform in binding and style with the latest fine-paper edition of the Aldine Poets (in foolscap 8vo size, printed at the Chiswick Press). The price is 5s. per volume.
Each volume will be edited with notes where necessary to clarify the text. A memoir will be included at the beginning, along with a portrait, provided an authentic one is available.
