Philip Schaff & Henry Wace (eds.) · 1904

I must make special reference to the Dictionary of Christian Biography by Smith and Wace, which I kept constantly at my side, as well as the first and second volumes of Schaff’s Church History, whose bibliographies were especially serviceable. Many of Valesius’ notes remain valuable, despite the great advancements in historical knowledge since his time. Less can be said for the commentary by Heinichen. Richardson’s Bibliographical Synopsis, published as a supplement to the Ante-Nicene Library, did not reach me until most of this work was completed, though it proved helpful for the final section and allowed me to omit long, repetitive book lists.
Three years ago, I had the privilege of studying the fourth and fifth books of Eusebius’ Church History with Professor Adolf Harnack in his seminar at Marburg. I owe special thanks to that eminent scholar for his help, inspiration, and the light he shed on many difficult passages.
I also wish to express my gratitude to Dr. Isaac G. Hall of New York and Dr. E. C. Richardson of Hartford for information regarding specific editions of the History. I thank the Rev. Charles R. Gillett, Librarian of Union Theological Seminary, and the Rev. J. H. Dulles, Librarian of Princeton Theological Seminary, for granting me access to their libraries and for their unfailing courtesy. Finally, I thank Mr. James McDonald of Shelbyville, Kentucky, for translating the "Testimonies for and against Eusebius," and Mr. F. E. Moore of New Albany, Indiana, for assistance with the indexes.
