J. Gildemeister of Bonn, was helpful to me in deciphering many passages.
The latter difficulty—that the ink has faded significantly—is particularly noticeable on the last page, leaf 29a, and as a result, determining the age of the manuscript is also somewhat difficult and uncertain.
According to the new catalog of oriental manuscripts of the University Library at Leiden,Op. cit. vol. III, p. 312. it would date from the year 573 of the Hegira original: "der Flucht". HanebergOp. cit. p. 373. gave the year 539. However, as the addition "i.e., 1197" already proves, there is a printing error here: 539 for 593. The latter is correct.
I believe I am justified in reading the signature as follows:
wa-as-salām tamma mā wujida min hādhā al-ʿarḍ wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi awwalan wa-ākhiran kamā huwa ahluhu wa-mustaḥiqquhu wa-ṣallā allāhu ʿalā Muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-sallama taslīman kathīran ilā . . .Two illegible words. wa-faragha min naskhihi laylat as-sabt ar-rābiʿ wa-al-ʿishrīn min dhī al-ḥijja min sanati thalāth wa-tisʿīn wa-khams miʾa
"Greeting! It is finished, what was available of this subject. Praise be to God in the beginning and in the end, as He deserves and is entitled. May God bless Muhammad and his family and grant them abundant grace... He (the scribe) finished his copy on the night of Saturday, the twenty-fourth of Dhu al-Hijjah of the year 593."
Subsequently, the scribeIn the aforementioned catalog, the person who performed the collation of the manuscript and wrote the following words is distinguished from the copyist himself. I believe I can recognize one and the same hand with certainty in the handwriting. added:balagha muqābalatan: yawm al-arbiʿāʾ rābiʿ ʿishrīn rabīʿ al-awwal sanati arbaʿ wa-tisʿīn wa-khams miʾaThe following I cannot decipher.
