justice and temperance, which is evident in itself. Now, whether the virtue of liberality is found in all parts of this Republic or only in one, will be investigated hereafter, for it requires some consideration. Since, therefore, the matter is thus, and it was shown in the previous part of this science what the virtues of men are simply, it remains, certainly, that we say something more about them for a more exact cognition of them.

The first is that those conditions be preserved which, if they were granted before in any of them, one could act.
Fortitude?
For example, if it is asked what fortitude is, we will respond simply that it is a certain affection in the soul, a mean between audacity and timidity, and a habit through which one behaves bravely where, to what extent, and when there is a need. Nevertheless, this definition is not enough, for certain proper precepts are missing that are necessary at the time of performing the action, since otherwise, the action cannot take place. And yet, as it pleased Aristoteles Aristotle, the end of this cognition is action, not science.

The second is how virtues of this kind are instituted in the minds of adolescents, and gradually coalesce in them until they are perfected, then which ones are perfect, in what way they ought to be preserved whole, and finally with what care vices themselves are removed from the minds of the wicked. In the end, the reason of this business and the art of medicine seems the same.
