established where the breeze from the sea does not reach; for which reason it does not grow even in Arcadia; but savory and marjoram and such like grow in many places and in many ways. This occurrence is therefore similar to that of the olive; for not even that tree is thought to grow at a distance of more than three hundred stades from the sea.

5. Sage (sphakos) and salvia (elelisphakos) differ as if one were the cultivated and the other the wild form; for the leaf of the sage is smoother, smaller, and more parched, while that of the salvia is rougher.

There are also two kinds of horehound; for the one has a herbaceous leaf which is more deeply engraved, and its incisions are very distinct and deep, which is why druggists use it for certain purposes. The other is rounder and very parched, like that of the sage, and has less distinct incisions and is less engraved.

6. Of fleabane (konyza), there is a male and a female. It has differences just like other plants that are divided in this way; for the female has finer leaves, is more compact, and is smaller as a whole, while the male is larger, has thicker stems, more branches, and has a larger and glossier leaf, and furthermore, the flower is brighter. Both are fruit-bearing; the plant as a whole sprouts and flowers late, about the time of Arcturus and after...
