The water-colour sketches and the photographs are by my husband: he deposited the negatives of these and many other photographs with the Hellenic Society, where they may be consulted. My thanks are due to the Committee of the British School at Athens for the gift of electrotypes for Plates 22a, 25b, 29, 31; to the editors of the Bulletin de Correspondance Hellénique for permission to reproduce Plate 9; to Messrs. Brockhaus, Leipzig, for permission to reproduce Fig. 2, and Plates 8 and 10. The hypothetical plan of a typical monastery (Fig. 1) was kindly drawn for me by the Rev. Dr. W. A. Wigram, D.D.; the sketch-map (Fig. 3) by Mr. W. B. Dukes, who has also superintended the illustrations in general. The index, the glossary, and the revised bibliography are by myself. Throughout the editing, generous help has been given by Mr. G. F. Hill.
