I have read Palaeographia Graeca, divided into seven books, by Dom Bernard de Montfaucon, Priest and Benedictine Monk of the Congregation of Saint Maur, by order of the Most Illustrious Chancellor of France; I have judged the work to be learned and laborious, of the greatest utility for understanding and reviewing ancient Greek codices, and therefore most worthy of publication. Paris, March 7th, in the year of our Lord 1708.
Louis, by the grace of God, King of France and Navarre: To our beloved and faithful Councilors, the persons holding our Parliaments, Masters of Requests in Ordinary of our Household, Grand Council, Provost of Paris, Bailiffs, Seneschals, their Civil Lieutenants, and others of our Justices to whom it may concern, GREETING. Our beloved Dom Bernard de Montfaucon, Priest and Benedictine Religious of the Congregation of Saint Maur, having represented to us that he desires to give to the public several works of his composition, entitled: Palæographia Graeca, sive de ortu & progressu Characterum Græcorum, deque omnibus ad veterem scriptionem Græcam spectantibus, additis Schematibus, & exemplis a tempore Peloponnesiaci belli usque ad decimum-sextum a Christo nato sæculum, ex marmoribus & nummis atque Codicibus manuscriptis. Opuscula Sanctorum Patrum quindecim in Hexapla & versiones antiquas. Onomasticum Hebraïcum secundum veteres Græcas versiones [Palaeographia Graeca, or on the origin and progress of Greek characters, and on all things pertaining to ancient Greek writing, with added diagrams and examples from the time of the Peloponnesian War up to the sixteenth century after the birth of Christ, from marbles, coins, and manuscript codices. To which are added Greek diplomas of the Kingdom of Naples and Mount Athos, a review of its monasteries and libraries, and a description translated from the Greek original into Latin. All that survives of the Origenian Hexapla, at least ten times more complete than has hitherto been published: with ancient Greek readings, expressed from the Samaritan and Syriac. Minor works of the Holy Fathers, fifteen in number, on the Hexapla and ancient versions. A Hebrew Onomasticon according to the ancient Greek versions]: and having requested that it please us to grant him our Letters of Privilege necessary for this purpose. We have permitted and by these presents do permit him to have the said books printed, together or separately, in such form, margin, typeface, and as many times as he shall see fit, and to have them sold and distributed throughout our Kingdom for the duration of sixteen consecutive years, counting from the day of the date of these presents. We forbid all persons, of whatever quality or condition they may be, to introduce foreign impressions into any place under our obedience, and forbid all Printers, Booksellers, and others to print, cause to be printed, or counterfeit the said books, in whole or in part, without the express permission in writing of the said Petitioner, or of those who shall have rights from him, under penalty of confiscation of the counterfeited copies, of a fine of fifteen hundred livres against each of the offenders, one third to Us, one third to the Hôtel-Dieu of Paris, and the other third to the said Petitioner, and of all costs, damages, and interest; on the condition that these presents be registered in full in the Register of the Community of Printers and Booksellers of Paris, and this within three months of the date hereof: that the print-
