Humanity does not represent an evolution toward the better, the stronger, or the higher in the way that is believed today. "Progress" is merely a modern idea, that is to say, a false idea. The European of today remains, in his value, far below the European of the Renaissance; progress is by no means necessarily improvement, increase, or strengthening.
In another sense, there is a continuous success of individual cases in the most diverse places on earth and out of the most diverse cultures, with whom a higher type does indeed manifest itself: Something that is, in relation to humanity as a whole, a kind of Overman original: "Übermensch". Such strokes of luck of great success have always been possible and will perhaps always be possible. And even entire lineages, tribes, and peoples can under certain circumstances represent such a success.
One should not decorate or dress up Christianity: it has waged a war to the death against this higher type of man, it has banned all the fundamental instincts of this type, it has distilled the evil, the evil man, out of these instincts - the strong man as the typically reprehensible, the "reprobate man." Christianity has taken the side of everything weak, low, and botched; it has made an ideal out of the contradiction to the survival instincts of strong life; it has corrupted the reason of even the most spiritually strong natures by teaching that the highest values of spirituality are sinful, misleading, and temptations. The most pitiful example - the corruption of Pascal, who believed in the corruption of his reason through original sin, while it was only corrupted by his Christianity! -
