If you spot an error, have a suggestion, or just want to say hello — we’d love to hear from you.

...so that it may henceforth freely come into the hands of the learned and others, we grant to your discretion—who, as we have learned, are the executors of said testament—by these writings we command: that you diligently see to the selling of the aforesaid volumes for the price for which it may best be managed, even without the other executors of said testament, if there be any; and that you cause the said will to be fulfilled from the same price according to the resources of that price. And lest any of said volumes remain unsold, we inhibit all and singular persons, as well ecclesiastical as secular, of whatever dignity, status, rank, order, and condition they may be, under sentence of excommunication late sententiae—from which they may not be absolved except by us ourselves or by our special mandate, except in the article of death—and also the penalty of one thousand gold ducats of the Camera to be paid by each transgressor, which we apply in equal portions to the fabric of the Basilica of Saint Peter of the City and to our Camera, the penalties to be incurred ipso facto: that they do not presume in any way to purchase the aforesaid work from any person or persons other than those deputed for that purpose by you or one of you, for the time of seven years to be computed from the day of the commencement of said sale, nor to print it during said seven years. But if, which God forbid, they have not feared to rashly transgress this inhibition: we grant by the tenor of these presents the license and faculty to you and to each of you to denounce the aforesaid transgressors as excommunicated, and to command them to be avoided as such, and also to punish them individually with the aforementioned penalty of five hundred ducats, and to do any other things necessary or opportune thereupon. Notwithstanding any apostolic constitutions and ordinances and any other things to the contrary whatsoever.
