But having recognized secondarily that any of the two aforementioned sounds varies notably in quantity, in such a way that it sometimes appears simple, like that of any other consonant letter, not only in the beginnings of similar and above-noted words, but also in the middle, as in Grázia grace, spedizióne expedition, Vizij vices, Speziále special/apothecary, and Ozio leisure: and other times it demonstrates itself to be of such greater sound that it vividly attaches itself, and makes part of itself into the vowel that is placed before it; and it is pronounced no differently than if it were the sound of two similar consonants. Whence the preceding vowel, and that which follows it, have equally their due, the first to lift itself and be held; the second to maintain itself vigorous and entire in its pronunciation, as is truly heard in RAZA race/root, BELLEZE beauties, STIZITO irritated, POZO well, and GOZUTO goitered.
Having recognized, therefore, I say, the more and the less of these two sounds, and there appearing no other difference between the Zetas and the other consonants, as there is perhaps between the R or the S, in order to take from them the more vigorous ones: it would seem necessary to double them where the sound is found to be greater, so as not to pronounce Vizi for Vizzi, Belléza for Bellézza, Pázo
