sæ? Three, θ, φ, χ. How many middle? Three, β, γ, δ. The dense letters are opposed to the thin, φ indeed to π, χ truly to κ, and θ to τ.
And β is the middle between π & φ; γ is the middle between κ & χ; δ is the middle between θ and τ.
What is a syllable? A union of at least two letters. Improperly, however, even those which are of one letter are called syllables, such as α, ε. Into how many parts is the syllable divided? Into three: into long, into short, and into common. In how many ways is the long syllable spoken of? In two: either by nature or by position. By nature, whenever it has one of the long vowels, or a diphthong, or one of the two-time vowels extended; by position, truly, when after one, which is in the syllable itself, a naturally short vowel is followed by two consonants in any way, except for a mute before an immutable original: "immutabilem"; traditionally refers to a liquid consonant. Then it is common, since the same syllable can be long and short.
What is a word? The smallest significant part of constructed speech.
How many accents are there? Ten: acute ', grave `, circumflex ^, long -, short ˘, rough breathing ῾, smooth breathing ᾿, apostrophe ᾿, hyphen ῀, and the comma ,. Into how many are the ten accents divided? Into four: into tones, into durations, into breathings, and into affections.
How many tones? Three: acute, grave, and circumflex.
