The impiety of Julian the Apostate.

In the year of salvation 363, Julian the Apostate, in the second year of his Empire and the twelfth of Pope Liberius, sworn as an enemy of the Christians—whom he called Galileans in reproach—and likewise of the Cross of Christ, when he had learned from the Gospel that celebrated prophecy concerning the overthrow of Jerusalem and its Temple, so that not even a stone should remain upon a stone, strove to irritate and annul the prophecy of our Savior. He attempted, by every means he could, to lead the Jews to the restoration of the Temple, and promised them every assistance in meeting the costs, which he also provided. The Jews, considering that so opportune an occasion for a design long since conceived should by no means be spurned, and driven both by the counsels and aid of Julian and by an ardent desire to complete the work, began the undertaking so-
