expiating themselves according to the customary ceremonies of the Synagogue, and by fasts and alms awaiting the sign promised to them by GOD, which they so greatly desired; but as the day approached, all repaired to the Synagogue, dressed in the white and precious linen garments that each was able to afford, in the manner accustomed to them on the solemn Day of Atonement. And behold, suddenly, by the divine dispensation of providence, signs of the Cross appeared not only upon the linen garments which they were wearing, but also upon those which were kept at home. At the prodigious spectacle of these, some indeed, seized by dread and contemplating more deeply the work of the right hand of the Most High, passed over to the Orthodox faith; others, of a stiffer neck, persisted in their customary obstinacy of mind, asserting that this had happened through the art of the devil. Alphonsus Spina, a Jewish physician who was present at this miracle, recorded this history in its entirety in the volume against the Hebrews which he entitled The Wars of the Lord, by which many thereafter from that same sect of the Hebrews, being convicted, embraced the Christian Religion.
