In order to the Future Life, we are to enquire into the Rules we are to go by, in This, 1. Reason is one Rule, and the first, 2. By which we make a judgment of Good and Evil, 3. And are accountable unto God, 4. Notwithstanding the pretended Superiority of Sense, 5, 6. Our Subjection unto Whom, according to Reason—that is, Nature—is our Natural Religion, 7, 8. Either in the Duties we owe to our Selves and Others; as for example, In the Use of Temperance, 9. Sobriety, 10. Chastity, 11. Diligence, 12. Contentment, 13. Or in those we owe immediately unto God; In Learning to Know, 14, 15. Love, 16, 17. Fear, 18. Revere, 19, 20. Obey, 21. And Adore Him, 22. And herewith, to Rely upon him, 23, 24, 25. Chiefly, for our Future Happiness, 26, 27. To be always hereunto ready, especially in our Service of Prayer, 28, &c. to 32. And of Praise, 33.
Though the Law of Nature is of some force, 1. And is the Foundation of all Positive Laws, 2. Yet the giving of an Express Divine Law is necessary, 3. To add Light unto that of Nature, 4. Overshadowed with Darkness, 5, 6. Even among the Wisest Men and Nations, 7, 8. And to add Strength to it, 9. And unto Human Laws themselves, 10, &c. to 14. Nor was it fit for the Supreme Reason to leave Men entirely to their own Reason, 15, 16, 17. Nor to their own Will, 18. It would Impeach the Wisdom of his Creation, 19. And of his Providence, 20. And Eclipse his Goodness, in sundry ways, 21, 22, 23, 24.
