A formal, bust-length engraved portrait of the philosopher Benedictus Spinoza. He is shown with long, dark, curly hair, dark eyes, and a slight mustache. He wears a traditional 17th-century black doublet and a wide, flat white collar (rabat). The portrait is set within a simple rectangular frame. Below this frame is a rectangular plaque containing the subject's name. The entire composition is encased within a larger rectangular border featuring a dense, vertically-oriented cross-hatching or "woven" pattern. In the bottom-left corner, outside the inner frame, is the engraver's signature "H. Lips sculp."
