Victory to that Speech, the Goddess Saraswati, who holds the lute and the book.
Having placed the lotus-feet of my own father, Krishna, within my heart, I, having studied and expanded upon the scriptures, shall now expound upon the previous essential truths vasana underlying principle/rationale.
This commentary on the meaning of the Siddhanta-Shiromani Crest-Jewel of Siddhantas, which is concise in expression, is explained by Nrsimha for the sake of the joy of calculators.
Having composed an excellent commentary on the rationale of the Surya Siddhanta Sun's Treatise, I am now prepared to compose the Vasanavarttika Gloss on the Rationales for the Shiromani Crest-Jewel.
Now, the supremely compassionate Shri Bhaskaracharya—a crest-jewel of the lineage of the noble sage Shandilya; an ornament to the directions adorned by the pot-born sage Agastya; a resident of the city of Jada-vida, which is sheltered by the Sahya mountain range Western Ghats; a purifier of the Dandaka forest; a conqueror of many names; a leader of the ritualists; a teacher of those who follow the Yajur Veda; a master of astrologers; a teacher of those who know poetry, drama, and rhetoric; a creator of methods for increasing intelligence; a builder of the Sarvatobhadra All-auspicious and other astronomical instruments, comparable to Brahma and Vashistha; a refuge for the Maharashtra country; and the son of Maheshwaracharya—has composed the Siddhanta-Shiromani. He did this to rescue those who wish to understand the doctrine, but who are hindered by the mass of doubts found in the vast ocean of calculations created by Shridhara, Brahmagupta, Lalla, and Chaturvedacharya. There, wishing to destroy the host of obstacles and to ensure the completion of the work, he performs an auspicious act mangala benediction/invocation for the purity of the scripture.
Since he the Sun is the original teacher of the mathematical sciences for Pitamaha Brahma, Vashistha, Soma, Roma, Paulisha, and others, and because a certain promise of speech knowledge will arise through the grace of the Divine, and because of hearing the statements of the Surya Siddhanta, the prayer to the Sun for speech is appropriate. May that Sun reveal his speech to us. Who is he? He who is worshipped yajati. When he rises, the seasons rtavah seasons/sacrificial periods begin. The commentator, stating that the five are accepted only for those who perform sacrifices as instructed by the teachers, explains the word 'season' as referring to the Homa fire sacrifice. Everything that can be called a sacrifice exists in the Homa. The abandonment of substance directed toward a deity is indeed a sacrifice; and that same act, when it involves throwing into the fire, is Homa. "He performs the act commanded by the sacrifice; he does not offer what is not commanded." This is seen. Thus, there is no fault here. "He offers when the sun has risen; he offers when the sun has not risen"—the practice of the Agnihotra Homa is seen at sunrise.
