studies) I am certain that they have been observed until now. Conversely, I frankly admit that I have sprinkled in some plants that were indeed observed by others, but whose descriptions were incomplete, or whose native habitats original: "natales" did not match, or in which certain necessary characteristics were omitted.
Furthermore, since I observed several plants during my travels, and also received illustrations and descriptions of some from friends which served our purpose, it pleased me to organize them into their classes and insert them in appropriate places. I did this so that our history might become that much more complete.
Moreover, I make passing mention of many other plants whose history was published by others long ago. I do this because I discovered them growing in these neighboring provinces, even though many other regions also abound with them.
Additionally, I have revised the descriptions of those plants whose history was given in the Appendix to my Spanish observations. I have made them more detailed and, having inserted them in the appropriate places throughout the text, I have moved them to the second book. This is because, in the time that has passed, I happened to observe many things pertaining to their history more accurately.
Furthermore, I trust that you will look favorably upon this labor of mine, even if it perhaps does not meet your expectations. I hope you will interpret it kindly wherever I have made a mistake. If you do this, know that the remainder of the life which God, the best and greatest original: "opt. max.," short for Optimus Maximus, a title used for God., grants me shall be spent in promoting your studies to the best of my ability.
