After the aforementioned purgation and the placement of the aforementioned wick, you shall instill into the nostrils the juice of scabiach (which is anabamam), and it is a rose that grows in wheat in the fields; or the juice of orache, and let him use these until he is freed.
His disease principally arises from the eating of things excessively salty, acidic, and sharp in the extreme. And the cure for this is to abstain from the aforesaid things.
An apema also occurs in the tongue without pain; if you wish to name the apema itself, you may; if not, you shall name it an inflation arising from nature. And on account of this, the tongue is restrained and impeded such that it can barely speak conveniently without difficulty. And with this, the color of the tongue itself is not changed or altered in any way. And these are the diseases that most closely approach the tongue. And the cure for this is to hold in the mouth and apply through it the thing which is called lingua dura, and in Arabic it is called baualnatbaga, tempered with oil of roses; and let his food be subtle and light; and let it not blacken at all in the course of its treatment.
Diminution and difficulty of the movement and sense also happens to the tongue on account of a hurt arriving at the root of its senses, or on account of a hurt or disease existing in the member in which the sense and motion of the tongue itself has to occur. And the cure for this is the cure that we are about to mention in the final treatment concerning the diminution of the sense of the whole body and the relaxation of it; and the proper and principal medicine for the tongue itself is to chew pellitory and stavesacre before food, and to anoint the mouth with oil from the rind of a citron; and I will declare all of this in its own place, God permitting. And this disease, namely difficulty and diminution, does not occur to the tongue for the most part except from the whole [body]. And this occurs on account of the infusion of humidities coming from the brain into its nerves.
These apata are generated in the tonsils of the throat existing near the epiglottis. Wherefore, if you suspect a fetid matter, their disease will remove these humors by the will of God, by maturing them, nonetheless removing the pus from the head and thinning their regimen in such a way as will seem to you to be effective. Acting similarly concerning the humor poured out in the place, according to the nature of the humor itself, as it shall seem best to you to act.
Bothor also occurs in the mouth, and they are small, red pustules with excoriation, just as they are accustomed to occur in other members. And the cure for this is that you take fresh and tender walnuts with their shells, and they should be pounded very well, and boiled in water, and the mouth should be rinsed many times with the same; and mulberry and their decocted wine are similarly a medicine appropriated in this case.
The teeth are shaken and perforated and blackened. And this happens to them for the most part from a phlegmatic humor. And the cure for them is to mature with basil, and this is the principal cure in this case. And afterward, to mature the veins that are under the tongue. And let the mouth be rinsed with a decoction of the root of belc and the root of spagi, the parts of which should be equal. And if the time is winter, and the patient is elderly, let the mouth be washed and let him perform a gargle with subtle alkitran, and you shall have him rub his teeth with that powder which has to strengthen and cleanse and whiten the teeth, the recipe for which is this: Take of the resin or gum that exits from the marrow or heart of the date tree from a cut or incision in its bark, and let it be burned; and from this burned substance, take 2 drams, of orris also dried, 1 dram, and of sugar to the weight of all; and let a powder be made by grinding each by itself and sifting very finely. And let them rub the teeth with this before food, and wash the mouth with tepid water; and let him abstain entirely from the eating and drinking of those things that are excessively hot or cold in act.
Perforation also happens to the teeth. We have already said that which has to remove this hurt, alachic, i.e., cormiola, for if, a powder having been made from it, it is used for the rubbing of the teeth in the place of the generation of the hole, it will be able to remove the said hurt. But if the perforation and corrosion has been confirmed, and some of the substance of the tooth has been lost, it will seem to confer nothing in removing the disease, but will only preserve [it] so that further perforation and corrosion does not occur.
This hurt happens to the teeth from the eating of sharp things. And it is proven by experience that to eat fruits having astringency, or oiliness, or viscosity, helps in this case. And this binding of the teeth is found to occur nearly, namely this sense of binding, stupor, or freezing, which is not found to occur to any other member. And they have also affirmed that to eat purslane similarly has to remove this hurt; and I would rather recommend that this be removed, if it can be done, with some other thing not having acidity, which [occurs] with purslane or its like on account of its acidity. And if one is accustomed to the rubbing of the teeth many times with sweets, the teeth will not be easily frozen by all acidic things.
This hurt happens to the lips more than to all other members, and this on account of an evil humor existing in the stomach which is accustomed to compare every place. And this humor is, by its nature, hot, gross, and putrid, wherefore vapors and fumes ascend from it to the upper parts, whence the said fissures are created. We advise for such people syrup of squinanti of varied honey, and also to lick it many times during the days; and that they should be purged with hierapicra many times, and thus they will be freed by the will of God. And let one be content with the purgation made from hierapicra, for the reason that all laxatives that have to purge violently and impetuously draw humors from the whole body to the stomach, and they purge the whole body while the stomach remains full. And since this is such a medicine, it has to dry the whole body, wherefore the evil humor existing in the substance of the stomach will remain. And on account of this, hierapicra has been chosen by the ancients in the purgation of the stomach over all laxatives, while observing abstinence; thus it is done many times in other laxatives. And anoint the lips many times with oil of sweet almonds, and he will be freed, God granting.
Alcola are like stinging pustules that arise within the mouth. The cure for them is to hold in the mouth oil of fresh pines; and this disease is also removed with any astringent medicine without causing pain.
The tongue is blackened and split in acute fevers on account of the sharpness and the flushing of the liver. And the cure for this is the treatment of the fever, moistening the tongue many times with rose water, in which the seeds of melons have been infused for a long time, and thus it is cured.
This which is a disease is generated from a corrupted humor existing in the stomach or around the teeth. And the cure for this is to cleanse the stomach with hierapicra, and to rub the teeth with the bark of a walnut tree, and to wash the mouth with a decoction of coriander.
This disease is called lachoza in Arabic, and it is a relaxation made in one of the sides of the face, which, because of the relaxed [side], is seen by sight to be healthy, when it is not; but it is relaxed by the infirm, and it makes the healthy one appear distorted. I will record the cure of this when I shall treat of the cures of the relaxations of members. Here, however, I intend to place the proper cure of this. And it is to evacuate, or to cleanse, the mouth and its adjacent members by chewing grains of derama. And afterward, rinse the mouth with oil of citron rind. But [if the]...
