original: "F. M. MERSENNI M." Marin Mersenne was a monk in the Order of Minims and a central figure in the 17th century scientific revolution. He served as a hub for communication between major thinkers such as Descartes, Pascal, and Fermat. Mixed Mathematics refers to what we now call applied mathematics, including subjects like optics, astronomy, and mechanics.
A decorative rectangular woodcut vignette features a central mask or cherub like face. It is flanked by ornate scrollwork, cornucopias, and floral garlands. To the right of the ornament is a circular ink stamp featuring a crown above the initials "RB," signifying the Bibliotheca Regia, or Royal Library. Below the ornament is another circular library stamp, partially legible, mentioning "BIBL. PUB." and "NAZIONALE," indicating it was later part of a National Public Library collection.
