The page consists of a marbled endpaper with a traditional pattern of red, ochre-yellow, and black ink swirls on an off-white background. A rectangular white bookplate is pasted onto the center of the marbled surface.

At the top of the bookplate is the official seal of the City of Boston, featuring a harbor scene with a ship and the city skyline.

original: "Sicut patribus, sit deus nobis," the official motto of the City of Boston, derived from the biblical book of 1 Kings.

original: "Civitatis regimine donata," referring to the year Boston was officially granted a city charter.

In the center of the bookplate is an engraved portrait of an elderly man with white hair, Jonathan Phillips, set within an oval frame. The frame is flanked by ornate columns and decorative flourishes.

JONATHAN PHILLIPS, DIED, 1860.

Jonathan Phillips was a prominent Boston philanthropist and the first major donor to the Boston Public Library endowment.
