BOOK I. 13
and it is dispersed by strongly dissolving agents, which bring more forceful movement and agitation to the encroaching cause. This, then, is the method regarding the order of causes. Next, we will show what must be held regarding intertwined and composite conditions.
When separate and distinct diseases exist in the body, each should have its own separate logic of healing. Those that are far apart in their locations can have their own remedies applied without touching the others. These can be cured one by one or all together. It matters very little which one you decide to treat first. However, intertwined original: "impliciti". These are diseases that are distinct but located in neighboring tissues or organs. and composite original: "compositi". These are diseases that have merged or occupy the exact same physical space in the body. diseases can only be removed through the highest method and reason. Intertwined diseases sit in such neighboring parts that they commonly hinder each other's functions. They rarely have their own separate cure. The healing of composite diseases is even more complex. Since they cling deeply to one and the same part, and come together as if forged into one, whatever remedy touches one will likewise affect the others.
Therefore, since it is not permitted to apply separate remedies to each individual part of composite or intertwined diseases, and since the cure of all cannot be properly managed at the same time, a method must be applied. This method establishes the order for each: what must be healed in the first, second, third, or fourth place. Furthermore, it sometimes happens with such varying concurrent diseases that they entirely agree. This occurs when the cure of one helps heal the other, or at least does not hinder it. Sometimes they disagree, when the cure of one inconveniences the other and brings delay. Sometimes they partly agree and partly disagree, so that the cure of one both helps and hinders the other.
The method of treatment to be held if intertwined and composite diseases agree.
Intertwined and composite diseases that either agree or do not disagree can be healed both together and separately. When this is done separately, it is permitted to begin from either one. For example, if the eye is held by the intertwined conditions of cataract original: "suffusio". In the 16th century, this was often described as a "suffusion" or pouring of morbid fluid behind the iris. and opacity original: "albugo". A white spot or film on the cornea that blocks light., and their locations are very close, the cataract can be pushed down with a needle while the opacity remains. The opacity can also be cleared while the cataract remains. They can even both be removed at the same time if it seems best. Similarly, if the li...
