The "Nurturing Gymnasium of Bologna" refers to the University of Bologna, one of the oldest universities in the world.
Giovanni Ciampoli was an Italian priest and a close friend of Galileo Galilei. He fell from grace in the Vatican shortly before this book was published.
An ornate heraldic emblem or printer's device features a central flower, possibly a rose or thistle, upon which a bee and a spider are perched. A banner above the flower reads "From here honey" original: "HINC MEL" on the left and "From here poison" original: "HINC VENENVM" on the right. This imagery suggests that the same source can provide different results depending on the nature of the gatherer. The shield is surrounded by elaborate scrollwork, a decorative mask at the top, and a satyr-like face at the base.
A circular institutional library stamp appears to the right of the central emblem. It is partially faded and contains a floral motif with surrounding text.
original: "Superiorum permissu"; this indicates the text was reviewed and approved by both ecclesiastical and civil censors.
