to read; because I had no book preceding me here. That the divisions of the books into chapters were made by the author himself is certain from the end of Book VI, chapter 12, and Book VIII, chapter 9. It is also beyond doubt that the headings ascribed to them were added by librarians and transferred into titles from the margins. Consequently, I felt I had some liberty regarding them. Indeed, had the format of the work allowed, I would have ordered them to return from whence they came, without the author’s command.
Beyond this, it was my intention to add notes and some observations of my own on the author. However, apart from what I have just related, another reason was the format of the book. Both I and the printer preferred it to be εὐμετακόμιστον easy to carry for the present—he for the sake of profit, I for the sake of the author. I hope to find all the more buyers and readers for the author, the more this edition is corrected and more elegant than the others, and better suited for carrying about. Farewell, and may your favor be a stimulus to me to attempt greater and better things for your benefit.
