A highly detailed Baroque copperplate engraving serving as the frontispiece for Christoph Scheiner's "Rosa Ursina."
At the top center, the "IHS" monogram of the Society of Jesus radiates divine light. Flanking the top are the names of the author, "P. CHRIST. SCHEINER E SOC. IESV," on the left, and the dedicatee, "AD PAVLVM IORDAN. II. VRS. BRACC. DVC." (Paolo Giordano II Orsini, Duke of Bracciano), on the right.
Below the divine light is an oval medallion portrait of "S. BATHILDIS VRSINA," a queen of the Franks. Two putti (cherubs) emerge from clouds to hold a flowing banner beneath her that reads: "VRSINAE CAELVM PRAEFERT INSIGNIA GENTIS" (The sky bears the insignia of the Orsini family).
The center of the page is dominated by a large celestial sphere. At its heart is the "ROSA VRSINA SIVE SOL" (The Orsini Rose or the Sun), depicted as a sun whose center is formed by a many-petaled rose, representing sunspots. This sun sits within a zodiac belt showing signs such as Leo and Cancer. Below the sun, rays descend onto a landscape or a representation of the earth.
Surrounding this central sphere are four allegorical vignettes representing the foundations of knowledge:
1. Top Left: "AVCTORITAS SACRA" (Sacred Authority), showing a hand from the clouds holding a plumb line over a book.
2. Top Right: "RATIO" (Reason), showing an eye in the clouds and a hand writing with a pen.
3. Bottom Left: "AVCTORITAS PROFANA" (Profane Authority), showing a hand writing in a book next to a lantern.
4. Bottom Right: "SENSVS" (The Senses), showing a hand using a telescope, a pair of compasses, and a quadrant.
The entire composition is framed by dense, billowing clouds. At the bottom center, resting on the clouds, is the elaborate heraldic coat of arms of the Orsini family, featuring their characteristic rose and bear motifs.
