The Ursine Rose, or the Sun

AMBITION itself should have stopped at these heights; nor should the glory of YOUR FAMILY strive for anything more, if mortal happiness could fill immortal souls. Therefore, the URSINI dared to go even higher, and to invade HEAVEN itself; they led colonies there, and filled that commonwealth with new and great citizens. Some of these were of the purple of MARTYRS, others of the mantle of innocence; both rendered the light of their birth, which they had drawn in abundance from the URSINI Princes, more clear by the brightness of their life and their illustrious death. And so that I may pass over in a certain sacred silence all the ADALBERTOS, VOLUSIANOS, JOHN OF TRAU original: "IOANNES TRAGVRIENSES", and many others who were prodigal of great souls and men most respected for the sanctity of their life, if I produce ONE BENEDICT for YOU (whom YOUR cradles claim for themselves), a religiously great progenitor of a great offspring: who will deny that a truly excellent SUN has emerged from the URSINI; by whose single wholesome rise, a dying Religion, as if by infused heat, has revived?

If I show you the same man, already slipped away from a Noble house, already led into ancient solitudes, already rolled among the prickles of the THICKET: who will deny again that a ROSE has emerged from the URSINI; which, blushing among the thorns, has captivated the senses and souls of all with its most beautiful color and sweetest scent? Wherefore it seems no wonder to me now if even YOUR SERVANTS, excited by such a fragrant Rose, rush into equal examples today; truly, they are drawn by related blood.

Of such a kind were YOU yourself, ILLUSTRIOUS DUKE; you were recently an example, when you allowed with an equal mind two jewels of YOUR FAMILY, brothers german, I say, most choice PRINCES, already great in their own honors—one FRANCIS, the other VIRGINIUS—to renounce all human things, and, spurning the glory of the Court, to hide themselves in Religious retreats: Where, situated in obscurity, they might shoot forth rays of their VIRTUE further than they had before of their DIGNITY. This was of your art and talent; that, being established at the highest peak, since the splendor of the family OF YOURS could scarcely grow further there, you learned to become clearer and more illustrious through RELIGIOUS obscurity itself.

Wherefore, as an admirer of this MOST ILLUSTRIOUS OBSCURITY as much as of YOUR most Glorious Splendor, I deemed it most equitable that, while on earth the URSINI PRINCES shrink from being seen by mortals, all mortals should look up to the URSINE ROSE in the SUN.
