All doctrine which relies on order is threefold. The first arises from the notion of the end, which occurs through resolution. The second, however, B arises from the composition of those things which were discovered by resolving. The third from the dissolution of the definition: which we now institute. We can call this not only the dissolution of the definition, but also an explanation (as some call it), or resolution, or division: or, as some, an explanation: or, as others, an exposition. Some from the sect of Herophilus have approached a doctrine of this kind, such as Heraclides of Erythrae. Those who also attempt to effect that which is done by composition, both the Herophilics themselves, and some from the Erasistrateans, and C A Athenaeus of Attalia have attempted to do. Nevertheless, no one before us [has attempted] that which [proceeds] from the end.
