Since no one can surpass them, one can hardly attain these qualities if they are a stranger to their writings. To say nothing of the fact that, since these writings are laid out by posterity to strengthen their own work and are cited everywhere, it is important for those who pursue these studies to have them ready at hand, not to say at their fingertips. This edition seems likely to bring that about for you promptly, and at very little expense, at least compared to those which have hitherto been available, thick in their enormous bulk and expensive in price. But if this edition should nevertheless displease you, I pray that he may pay the penalty who, abusing his influence through friendship, pushed these trifles into the public light—not born for it nor owed to it—against my repeated protests.
