Oronce Finé, the author of the two short treatises contained in this volume, was a native of Briançon. He pursued his studies at the University of Paris and served as its rector. He subsequently became a bachelor in the faculty of medicine in Paris, after which he devoted himself entirely to the study of mathematics. He was an engineer in the army of Francis I at the Battle of Pavia, where he was captured alongside the King, to whom he remained constantly attached. Upon returning to France, after Francis I had founded the Royal College, he granted Oronce Finé a chair of mathematics in the new Lyceum.
