in the edition of 1522, & the first which bears the name of America in any of the editions of Ptolemy. His words are, "Laurentius Phrisius (this is only the Latin form of his name Laurenz Fries) calls Hylacomylus (Waldseemüller, author of the name of America) a deceased person in the Strasbourg edition of Ptolemy from 1522 — The map of the New Continent contained in this edition, drawn by Hylacomylus, presents for the first time in the editions of the Geography of Ptolemy the name America —"
These two last-mentioned maps very possibly do not belong to this edition, but have merely been bound up with it as there are no tables accompanying them —
The earliest map in which the name America is introduced according to Humboldt, is one accompanying an Edition of Solinus in 1520, constructed by Apianus (Bienenwitz).
