Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius H. Usener, Anecdoton Holderi. Festschrift of the 32nd Philological Conference, Wiesbaden, Bonn 1877, p. 43 ff., discusses the genuine form of the name and the common form Boetius; cf. also S. Brandt in Corp. scr. eccl. Lat. (CSEL) XXXXVIII, p. VII, n. 1., born of a noble family Usener op. cit. p. 37; cf. Schepss, N. Arch. f. ält. deutsche Gesch. XI 125. See the Index of Names for locations of Boethius and others. I will cite only a few books written on Boethius's Consolation, as they are collected in the well-known book by Ueberweg I¹² (1926), 199, 654; II¹¹ (1928), 139, 670., having performed the highest honors, was magister officiorum Master of Offices from September 1, 522, when at Verona he defended Albinus, who had been denounced by Cyprianus, and defended the innocence of the entire senate; he himself was accused by Opilio, the brother of Cyprianus, and Basilius, a relative of Opilio, and Gaudentius Cf. L. Cipolla, Per la storia del processo di Boezio. Studi e docum. di stor. e diritto XXI (1909), 335. I. Sundwall, Abhandl. z. Gesch. d. ausgehenden Römertums. Öfversigt af Finska Vetenskaps-Societetens förhandlingar LX (1917/18) Sec. B No. 2 (Helsingfors 1919), 246: 'because of treason in late autumn 523. During the course of the trial, an accusation was made regarding machinations dangerous to the state. The verdict followed in the summer of 524, the execution around October 23' (see the following note). On the causes of the condemnation cf. R. Bonnaud, L'éducation scientifique de Boèce, Speculum IV 199.. He himself speaks of the letters composed falsely, by which he was accused of having hoped for Roman liberty; they were said to have been sent to Constantinople. He was condemned in 524, if we put our trust in the Ravenna Fasti Mon. Germ. Auct. Ant. IX 274. XI 323; with other sources that record the twenty-third day of the month of October in the year 525 (see Migne LXIV 1555; Norden in the work that Hinneberg titled 'Die Kultur der Gegenwart' I⁵, VIII 487 [p. 494: a. 524.]; Goedeckemeyer in the Muellerian handbook V 1, 1⁴ 299), it seems that trust should be denied to Usener..
