at the end of book IX. Concerning the words which you have below on p. 336, H. Jordan tried to fish out from the words of the poem that Eustochius did not seek out the books, but read and annotated them with his own skill, just as others are named in such subscriptions; 1) Gött. Gel. Anz. 1886, 482. whom Hertz, however, refutes with the best of rights. 2) Die Eustochius-Recension des Gellius, Fleckeis. ann. CXLV (1892) 425.
Q²O² Finally, we must pause for a short time on the correcting hands of the codices (Q²O² etc.). These more often removed manifest errors, and sometimes introduced new conjectures. Among this number, the person who corrected codex Q stands out. For we discover a man who was not without wit, who removed not a few corruptions, and he did so both in agreement with others and alone, as in IX 1, 2 "iacias," X 15, 20 "exuit se," 24, 1 "marci tullii," XIV 1, 17 "hic," XV 8, 2 "delibari," XV 27, 5 "quia," XIX 9, 12 "addidit al." Plerumque, however, he applied his effort more boldly than successfully, not to say more impudently than prudently. For having inspected another codex 3) For where Q² agrees with others, especially B, the change is mostly very slight, such as IX 2, 6 "nullius," 2, 11 "inderentur," XIII 22, 1 "cunctos," 7 "calciamenti," XVI 4, 2 "censebis esse al."; more serious is XVII 16 "lemm. detegendis."—if he ever did so—the sciolus a superficial scholar/dabbler attempted to provide a remedy by his own initiative, falling foully into mere slips of the pen. Thus Q provides IX 6, 3 "portus," ω correctly "potius," but Q² entirely... XI 4, 1 Q (σ) "erupidie multatus," γ "euripidi aemulatus," Q² "erupedis imitatus"; XII 11, 2 Q "orent," ω "forent," Q² "essent"; XIII 5, 1 Q "ad spe vitae tenui," ω "ac s. v. t.," Q² "ad spem v. tenuis"; XV 5, 4 Q "inte inodit," ω "in te incidit," Q² "te mordet"; 11, 5 Q "meopolim," ω "nicopolin," Q² "neapolim"; 22, 5 Q "instutam," ω "instinctam," Q² "instructam"; XVII 5, 3 Q "minoris," ω "minutis," Q² "minoribus"; 10, 3 Q "redderetis se," ω "reddere iis se," Q² "redderet eis sui." In not a few places, he performed his task most insipidly, as in IX 14, 13 Q "pro genti," ω "progenii," Q² "pro genetivo"; X 26, 7 Q "tito," ω "cato," Q² "tito Livio"; XI 5, 4 Q "agne," ω "ac ne," Q² "cognoscere"; XIV 1, 2 Q "serto," ω "serio," Q² "secto"; 1, 3 "credemus," ω "crederemus," Q² "credamus"; XVI 5, 6 Q "uel-"
