But these are sufficient: for we neither wanted nor were able to exhaust this material in this place, especially since other reasons often affect the confusion of letters. And we have already warned here and there about the permutation of the words themselves; added to this is the fact that 'proximity', as Varro himself observed, counts for much. Thus 41, 7 sarcendo by patching is written for sariendo by hoeing because of the preceding sarculum hoe, 178, 6 vocabulis words for nominatibus names because of the following vocabulum word, 118, 12 ad obsenum to the obscenity because of what follows instead of Dossenum Dossenus, and similar things. Additions also occur, such as nominatuum of the names turning into nominatiuum nominative, ratio reason into oratio speech, abegi I drove away from 117, 15 into ab regia from the palace, virilia manly things 134, 13 because of betacismus b/v confusion (cf. p. XXVII) become liberalia Liberalia festival, and other things of this kind and of other kinds.

Truly, if the Varronian text is thus [burdened] with very many and very frequent faults...

1) Regarding l and r cf. annotation to 65, 23 sq. (where 18 sq. is corrected): although what is read at 59, 3 praetoria instead of Plaetoria and 110, 7 glad. instead of grad. must be revoked to the exchange of words; but cf. 32, 17.
2) From which we also conjectured at 177, 2 that it should be corrected not to limo limabo I will file with mud, but to lima limae by file [you will] file, with the addition bo I will deleted.
3) More often, of course, the words were changed rather than the letters, such as 124, 11; 145, 13 sq., and others.
