As regards the nature of the collaboration, though both editors have revised each other’s work, the division of labour may roughly be stated as follows. Professor Butler is responsible for the chapters in the introduction dealing with the life and works of Apuleius and the MSS. manuscripts of the Apologia, for the text and apparatus criticus critical notes on the text, and for those portions of the commentary which deal with textual questions and the subject-matter in general. Mr. Owen is responsible for the introductory chapter on the style and language of Apuleius and for the notes dealing with those same questions. He is also responsible for the majority of the notes dealing with passages relating to magic.
