PREFACE

Regarding invention, I believe I have spoken sufficiently. I have dealt not only with those methods that pertain to instructing, but I have also handled the movements of the soul original: "motus animorum" — referring to appeals to the emotions (pathos).. However, just as it is not enough for those erecting a building to gather stones, timber, and other useful materials unless the hand of a craftsman is employed to arrange and place them, so in speaking, any amount of material, however abundant, would be merely a confused heap unless that same arrangement binds those materials into order and connects them to one another.

2 It is not without reason that arrangement is placed second among the five parts The five parts of rhetoric: invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery., since the first part is worth nothing without it.
