places He is whole under different hosts i.e., the Eucharistic elements: and this is because of the union of the flesh with the Word; whence it deservedly has more than any other creature, namely, that it can be in many places simultaneously. From what has been said, it is clear that to be everywhere simply belongs to the Creator alone, but to be in one place belongs to the creature alone. To be in many places, however, but not everywhere, belongs to the body of Jesus Christ.
God is in things in many ways, and how?
Note that God is in things in many ways, namely by nature: and thus He is everywhere potentially and presentially. Likewise, by grace: thus He is in the good. John 15:4: He who abides in me, and I in him, here, etc. Likewise, by glory: thus He is in the rational power of the soul as truth, in the concupiscible as goodness, in the irascible as piety. Likewise, by union: thus He was in the womb of the Virgin united to human nature; and in the sepulcher united to the flesh; and in hell united to the soul of Christ. Likewise, God is said to be somewhere through the revelation of hidden things. Genesis 28:16: Truly the Lord is in this place. Likewise, through the excellent representation of His traces, thus He is said to be in heaven original: "in cælo" (cf. Matthew 6:9): because there His power, wisdom, and goodness shine most brightly; or by identity of nature, just as He is
The Son in the Father.
The Son in the Father, and the Father in the Son original: "Filius in Patre, et Pater in Filio" (cf. John 10:38 and 14:10), and the Holy Spirit in both. Likewise, through the operation of miracles. Exodus 8:19: The finger of God is here. Likewise, through conservation and governance, thus He is in the world cf. Psalm 118:90 and 91. God is in Himself, as Alpha and Omega original: "Alpha et Omega" (Apocalypse 1:8), according to that: Tell where he was then, etc. Job 38:3 and 4. For He is in the world like a king in his kingdom. Bernard says: "God reigns everywhere, commands everywhere, and His majesty everywhere fills and embraces all things." Likewise, in an angel, as beauty; in so far as truth is in the soul, He is there as truth; and as flavor, in so far as goodness is present. Likewise, He is in the Church, just as a father of a family is in his house. Whence that: Behold I am with you even to the
consummation of the age original: "usque ad consummationem sæculi" (Matthew 28:20). Likewise, in the elect, as a liberator from evils and a helper in good; and this is what Bernard says: "God is In the world, in other men, in Himself, how is God present? admirable in creatures, lovable in men, desirable in angels, incomprehensible in Himself, intolerable in the reprobate." Likewise, in the damned, He is as terror and horror. Augustine says: "He who leaves you, where does he go? Unless from you pacified, to you angered." For we cannot escape the hand of the Lord. Psalm 138:8: If I ascend into heaven, you are there, etc.
If, however, it is doubted whether God is in the devil: it should be known that there are certain names which import natures as Is God in the devil? What do names import? they are necessary, and to these it must be granted that God is present. There are others through which deformities are understood, such as the devil: concerning which it is not to be said that God is present, unless it is added, in so far as he is a spirit, or something similar.
God is in the faithful soul as a bridegroom in the God is in the soul in many ways. bridal chamber, a king in his kingdom, a tower in a castle, a master in the schools, a fountain in gardens, light in darkness, treasure in a field, wine in a cellar, a carbuncle in gold: or like manna in the ark, a seal on a document, medicine in a pharmacy; like a harp at a banquet, an image in a mirror; like fruit on a tree, oil in a lamp, a lily in a valley.
Just as God is everywhere, and yet is not circumscribed or contained by any God is unmeasured. place, so He is eternal; and yet He is measured by no time. For neither present, nor past, nor future time befits Him.
